Applying to Medical School in Summer 2018 & Matriculating in Fall 2019

If you are applying to medical schools in summer 2018 for matriculation in fall 2019, then you need to begin to prepare this spring.  If you are a Texas resident applying through TMDSAS please see additional information below.  Students who will be reapplying to medical school should also reference our Being a Reapplicant Page.  Below is a brief guide for all applicants:

TO DO NOW

  • Declare your Intent to Apply on AdviseStream; this is important so that we can send you information, reminders and announcements about the application process.

TO DO IN FEBRUARY-APRIL

  • Work on your RMA form; this is a draft of your actual primary application
  • Schedule a RMA appointment for a review of this draft and plans

RMA appointments should be scheduled on AdviseStream at least 7 days prior to the requested appointment.  Upload your RMA form on AdviseStream at least 3 business days prior to your appointment so we can read it before the meeting.  Scheduling an early RMA appointment is advised, so you have time for revisions before finals, graduation, etc. but be sure to allow enough time to do an intentional and complete RMA form, so you will have our best advice.

  • Begin research schools that you may apply to
  • Begin working on your personal statement
  • Ask for letters of recommendation

TO DO IN MAY

  • Begin your AMCAS application (it becomes available May 1)
  • Have a transcript sent to AMCAS with final spring grades
  • Finalize the list of schools you will apply to
  • Finalize your personal statement

TO DO THE END OF MAY/FIRST WEEK OF JUNE OR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

  • Apply
  • Email a PDF of your verified primary (AMCAS/AACOMAS) to prehealth@duke.edu if you are requesting a committee letter
    • For the TMDSAS application, please send a PDF of your application and forward the email from TMDSAS stating that it has been transmitted to school to prehealth@duke.edu

TO DO IN JULY

  • Submit secondary applications & fees
  • Complete a CASPer test if applicable.  (You do not need to study for the CASPer, but should review the format)

TO DO IN AUGUST 2018-APRIL 2019

  • Interview
  • Acceptances or waitlist notices come from mid-October 2018-July 2019

For more details see the topics in the left sidebar.  If you did not attend one of our Kickoff Application 101 meetings in November and January, review the slides so that you can have an overview of the application process and expectations.  The slides, the RMA form, instructions and useful links are below:
