Sophomore
The sophomore year is pivotal. You’ve chosen your major and are taking your prehealth science requirements. The characteristics of an effective physician are ones developed over time through discipline, experience, and learning which filter to form your approach and values. You want to develop your ability to relate effectively with all kinds of people and broaden your understanding of the world in addition to developing your science knowledge.
- Attend Office of Health Professions Advising workshops and seminars. Monitor the calendar of events.
- Update your myHPA account. Track your progress. Join the HPA listserv.
- Meet with your Prehealth Advisor. Identify problems early. Get help.
- Identify the best sequence of prehealth required courses for your major/academic plan.
- Focus on completing science courses with distinction. Engage rigorously.
- Develop relationships with your professors. Look for research projects.
- Demonstrate leadership in clubs and programs where you are engaged.
- Look for shadowing and other clinical opportunities.
- Seek research experiences. Contribute to papers and presentations.
- If you experience problems, get help right away from your professors and your HPA Advisors.
- Apply for summer experiences that enable you to make a contribution to medicine.
