Sample Schedules
EXAMPLES OF POSSIBLE COURSE SCHEDULES FOR DUKE STUDENTS PREPARING FOR THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS
With a few exceptions (e.g., prerequisite requirements for a course), there is no specific order in which you must take the required courses for health professions schools. Below are some examples of how you might plan to complete these courses for medical, dental, veterinary schools and other health professions programs. Keep in mind that specific schools may have additional requirements, which can be found on the school’s website. In particular, veterinary schools may require additional science course work, including some courses not taught at Duke.
- These sample schedules are set up with 32 slots for courses. Please remember for the 34 course requirement for graduation you will need to fit at least two additional courses into your schedule.
- Some upper level (UL) biology courses cannot be taken before completion of introductory chemistry courses.
- In most of the schedules we have indicated additional UL biology courses. We recommend that students take more than the minimum 2 semesters of biology required by most health professions schools and that at least one upper level course be taken prior to taking the standardized test required for admission, e.g., MCAT, DAT, GRE, OAT.
- Addition of other UL biology courses in your curriculum can occur at any time, including the senior year.
- Particular semesters indicated in these sample schedules are just examples. You may feel free to fit them into your own particular curriculum.
- Keep in mind that a second ENGLISH/LIT course may be required in addition to WRITING 20.
- These schedules do not attempt to display all requirements for your degree or your major. Work with your academic advisor and departmental faculty advisor to make sure you include the courses you need for your major and for your Duke curriculum requirements.
- UL= upper level (100 or above)
- L= laboratory course
- DUML= Duke University Marine Lab
- Blank spaces indicate electives
