Pratt Students and Biology

A special word on biology courses for Pratt students preparing for medical school.

The demands of the engineering curriculum with regard to the number of required courses can make it difficult to take 2 biology courses with lab-particularly if you want to also take BIO118. Because of this, some years ago, we polled medical schools to see if they would be willing to be a bit flexible with regard to biology courses for BME majors. We asked if they would accept the following combination of courses as meeting the requirement of 2 biology courses with lab for BME majors:

  1. One BIO or BAA course with lab.
  2. Plus BME 201, Electrophysiology. This course  has also been acknowledged by med schools as a biology lab course for purposes of medical school prerequisites.

  • Additional recommendation. We would encourage BME students to take one BIO or BAA course without lab (generally this would be BIO 118) to strength the biological sciences component of your application and also for MCAT preparation.

Most medical schools will accept this set of courses.
