Introduction
Applying to a health professions program is a time-consuming process. We created this site to help guide you through that process. It is a process that will require a great deal of focus and attention from you, the applicant. This web site will help you to understand the process and how it works; however, you are responsible for your application. You will have to take initiative. There are certain steps that will be required of you in working with the HPA. They are not hoops for you to jump through. Instead, they are specifically designed to prepare you for the actual application process and to stress to you the necessity of:
- thinking ahead
- planning
- informing yourself of the requirements and expectations of schools
- being realistic in selecting the schools to which you will apply
- attending to detail
- meeting deadlines
When faced with thousands of applications, professional schools can sometimes be demanding, inflexible, and unforgiving. It is not unreasonable for them to expect that, if training for their profession is important to you, you will meet those expectations in a thorough and timely fashion. Your chances of success will likely be directly related to the seriousness with which you approach the application process and this includes your work with the HPA.
The information on this site refers primarily to the application process to medical, dental and veterinary schools. Information for medical and dental schools is similar; however, there is enough of a difference in application to veterinary schools that pre-veterinary students should be careful to note the differences and, if particular questions arise, see a health professions advisor for more specific information. For additional information on application to dental school, you will want to refer to the website set up by the Duke Pre-Dental Society.
In order to set up an account and work with HPA, open an account in myHPA and complete your Profile. Deadlines are given in myHPA for the current matriculating class. Our objective is to help you to prepare for your formal application to the health professions schools of your choice and to successfully complete each step in the complex process.
